British woman jailed for 2 months in Iran after trying to watch a men's volleyball match in Tehran

A British woman has been locked up in a notorious jail in Iran for trying to watch a men's volleyball match.

Ghoncheh Ghavami, 25, was arrested and taken to Tehran's Evin jail a few days after attempting to watch a volleyball match between Iran and Italy on June 20.

She has spent 41 days in solitary confinement, according to her family.

Ms Ghavami went to the Azadi Stadium which ironically means 'freedom' - with other women to protest against Iran's stricture, introduced after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, forbidding females to attend male sporting events.

At first Ms Ghavami, who is studying law in London, was arrested then released, but when she went back to fetch her belongings, she was re-arrested and jailed.

Several others involved in the demonstration were also detained.

Her brother, 28-year-old Iman Ghavami, told ITV News: '[The family] can barely hold themselves together.

'They are torn apart not just my parents but my grandparents, my uncles, everybody.'

Iran's head of police, Esmail Ahmadi Moghadam, told the Fars news agency: 'In the current conditions, the mixing of men and women in stadiums is not in the public interest.

'The stance taken by religious scholars and the supreme leader remains unchanged, and as the enforcer of law, we cannot allow women to enter stadiums.'

Social media campaigns have sprung up in a bid to pressurise Iran into releasing Ms Ghavami. There's a Facebook group dedicated to helping her and the hashtag #FreeGhonchehGhavami is being appended to Twitter posts about her plight.

The Foreign Office said it was aware of the situation, but has little sway over Iran as it does not have official diplomatic ties with it, so it's unlikely to be able to help Ms Ghavami.

Amnesty International UK spokesperson Neil Durkin told MailOnline: 'We're extremely worried about Ghoncheh's predicament.

'She's been held in solitary for over a month in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison where she's been under the control of the country's Revolutionary Guards.

'Her lawyer has had no access to her or any documents about why she's being held, though we understand she's being investigated with a view to charging her with the extremely vague offence of "propaganda against the state".

'Ghoncheh is a prisoner of conscience and should be released immediately.'

Iran's rigid enforcement of Islamic code is down to the influence of its top authority, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who this week successfully underwent prostate surgery, according to Iranian state media.

Great White Shark Kills Man during his daily swim as his wife waited on the beach in Byron Bay

"Update :  A British ex-pat killed in a shark attack at a popular surfers' beach has been named as Paul Wilcox."

A local man has died while swimming after being attacked by a shark at Byron Bay in NSW.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was bitten on his right leg by a shark around 15-20 metres offshore at the southern end of Main beach.

Witness Michelle Campano, who is holidaying in Byron Bay, told Daily Mail Australia: 'It was so horrible we were swimming and got yelled out of the water. It took them 45 minutes to close the beach. I think the whole town is in shock.'

A NSW Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed a man had been treated for a severe injury to his leg on Clarkes Beach near Main Beach after being pulled out of the water at 11am. A doctor performed CPR on the man but he could not be saved, the spokeswoman said.

The man, who is from Byron Bay, has been formally identified by a family member and police are expected to confirm his name once all family members have been told. His age is yet to be confirmed.

The man's wife was on the shore at the time, Inspector Bobbie Cullen said at the scene.

A witness, who was paddle boarding in the water when the attack happened, pulled the victim to shore.

Lawyer Mark Hickey said the victim appeared to have been swimming at the time and it is thought he was doing the popular swim from The Pass to Byron Bay.

He saw what he thought was a turtle and some seaweed in the water about 20 metres away but then realised it was blood and a two metre shark circling.

'The shark came back to him and had another go. I didnt know it was a person but when I realised I ran out and waded to the bank and grabbed him and did CPR but it was too late.

'I brought him back in and worked on him on the beach,' he told the the Daily Telegraph.

Mr Hickey performed CPR for 20-30 minutes on the victim before rescuers arrived.

Police have praised the onlooker who risked his own life to pull the man from the water.

It was an 'extraordinary act of bravery' and 'we can only be thankful for his efforts' they added.

Lifeguards have spotted a shark in the water off the beach, believed to be a Great White.

Insp Cullen said lifeguards were attempting to use a helicopter and jet skis to push the animal out to sea.

She said there was no plan to kill the shark, especially with Great Whites being a protected species

NSW Ambulance paramedic Andrew Chapman said the man was bitten above the knee.

'It was a fatal bite with major blood loss. He probably died in the water because there was no blood loss on the beach,' he told News Corp Australia.

A photgrapher at the scene said that the body was taken away at around 2.30pm and that there were no family members on the beach by the afternoon.

Holidaygoer Christian Campano, 35, told Daily Mail Australia everyone on the beach was shocked.

'(It was) pretty heavy, we're just in shock, Mr Campano said. It's all starting to hit home.'

He and his wife, Michelle, had gone for dip in the ocean when they were pulled from the water after the attack.

The couple headed up the beach and saw the victim receiving CPR.

Eventually, he saw police officers place a blanket over the man's head.

'He just looked still,' Mr Campano said.

It had been the first sunny day Byron had seen in some time, he said.

The Sunshine Coast Daily reported the victim was wearing flippers and was swimming.

A NSW police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia: 'A man, believed to be aged in his 40s, was in the water when he was bitten on the right leg by what is believed to be a shark.

'He was seen floating in shallow water, close to the shore line, and dragged onto the beach. An ambulance was called and he was pronounced dead a short time later.

'Inquiries into the identity of the deceased, and what he was doing in the water at the time of the incident, are continuing.

'A report is being prepared for the Coroner.'

Police have closed all Byron Bay beaches - from Tallows in the south to Belongil Beach in the north - to the public for the next 24 hours.

NSW government officers are being brought in to determine the type of shark involved in the attack.

The beach was not patrolled by lifesavers at the time of the incident. They are due to begin their watch of the beach next week.

A spokesman for NSW Ambulance said: 'A rescue helicopter and paramedics were dispatched to the scene.

'A doctor immediately treated the man on the beach but unfortunately despite clinical intervention including CPR the man has been pronounced deceased on the beach as a result of his fatal injuries.'

A worker at Byron Bay Beach Cafe said: 'We can't really see anything from this part of the beach but we heard the helicopter go over. It is a nice day and we have been really busy.'

A spokesman for Westpac Life Saver Rescue for the Northern Region told Daily Mail Australia: 'We were called at 10.50am with reports of a man who had been pulled out the water suffering a cardiac arrest. We were tasked but didn't actually get to the scene because the situation was too dire.'

Shiney Lefai, 50, who runs Wedding Celebrant on Clarkes Beach told Daily Mail Australia: 'I was in the cafe when I heard the helicopter going overhead. I saw the paramedics and the police rushing to the scene but it was too late. It was definitely not a surfer, I think it was someone just swimming.

'It is shocking with the amount of people that have come down for holidays.

'A shark attack is a one in a million kind of thing, it's not something that you think will happen.

'I have heard of sharks being sighted at Julian Rocks before, I have never heard of someone being killed by a shark at Byron before.

'I have lived here for over 10 years and it is the first time I have heard of it. Everyone in the town is shocked and thinking "it could have been me".

'Everyone swims and it is a beautiful summer day, there were more people swimming than usual.'

On April 3, a swimmer named Christine Armstrong, was also killed in the area by a shark.

The 63-year-old was attached at Tarthra beach while swimming with her husband as part of a group of five.

CCTV shows U.S Thugs beat couple on Missouri street after harassing female victim outside nightclub

Police are asking for help identifying a group of young males involved in an assault on a couple in Springfield, Missouri.

The Springfield Police Department has released surveillance video of the brutal beating that occurred on Friday August 22.

The couple, Meredith Cole and her boyfriend Alex Vessey, were both treated for serious injuries after the ordeal at a nearby hospital.

Both Mr. Vessey and Ms. Cole suffered major cuts and bruises from the altercation, with Ms. Cole also fracturing her ankle in the fight.

'It was pretty brutal,' she said.

According to KY3 News, the confrontation began when Cole was standing outside of the Outland Ballroom where Vessey was working as a DJ.

She told the station she was approached by the group of men, who began to sexually assault her.

She said she went inside the club to find Vassey and alert him to the assault.

Mr. Vessey and Ms. Cole left the club to try and identify the men who Ms. Cole said assaulted her when they were set upon by a group of six young black males.

Mr. Vessey is punched and kicked repeatedly, while one of the men punches Ms. Cole in the face, knocking her to the ground.

She can be seen repeatedly trying to separate the men from her boyfriend and she is again pushed to the ground.

After most of the young men run away, a white male wearing head-to-toe black and red sneakers runs into the shot and kicks Mr. Vessey multiple times before running off with the rest of the group.

Both Mr. Vessey and Ms. Cole appear to be bleeding from the head and Cole sustained a fractured ankle.

Speaking after the attack, Mr. Vessey said he found the attack 'unbelievable'.

'As soon as we started walking that way, about halfway down, they jumped on top of me,' he told OzarksFirst.com

'She tried to get them off me and they assaulted her too.'

'I wasn't scared,' he added. 'I was just mad that it was happening kind of unbelievable that people act like that.'

Ms. Cole said she fears the gang may strike again.

'Hopefully they get arrested and they're not going to do that to anybody else,' she told the publication.

Police can be seen running after the suspects in hot pursuit, but the group scattered and none of the perpetrators were caught.

The are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 869-TIPS.

CCTV Grandfather with tuxedo fought off THREE crowbar-wielding thugs after his house being burgled

This is the incredible moment a brave great-grandfather fought off three crowbar-wielding thugs while still dressed in his dinner suit after he returned home to find his house being burgled.

Businessman Andrew Adamson, 59, was returning home from a social event with his wife Liz, 58, when he noticed his front door had been forced open and three intruders were inside his property.

CCTV footage, taken from an alleyway outside his home in Kettering, Northamptonshire, captured the terrifying incident and shows the three masked suspects threatening Mr Adamson with a 2ft long crowbar.

The shocking footage has been revealed for the first time after two of the three gang members were jailed for the aggravated burglary.

Mr Adamson, whose wife Liz ran for help as soon as she realised the property was being burgled, was still wearing his dinner jacket and carrying a briefcase when he fought off the attackers.

The father-of-three struggled with the men in the alleyway, outside his front door, and didn't even back down when they threatened him with the crowbar and a razor blade.

Incredibly, he took on all three of the men entirely by himself and managed to eject them from his property one-by-one before they scarpered down the alley.

The grandfather-of-four was left with blood pouring from a head wound after they fled with his briefcase, which contained 400 worth of possessions.

Mr Adamson, who has lived at the house with his wife for over 30 years, had to have seven stitches to his head following the brutal attack.

He said: 'We came home and they were already in there. My wife opened the door and thought it was my son playing but then realised it wasn't.

'The next thing we know the chap comes out with the iron bar and sparks were flying off it when he hit it off the wall so he was really trying to whack me.

'I was trying to force him off and one slipped by me and took my briefcase.

'I followed them out into the street and I got hold of the other fella but the taller assailant came back for him and pulled a razor out so I decided that was the time to let go.

'I got hit several times over the side of my head and had to have seven stitches. I was bleeding like a stock pig.

'If my wife had been here on her own that night I dread to think what would have happened.

'They came here because, I believe, they thought there were large amounts of money here. But that just proves their lack of intelligence.

'I was not just going to let them stand by and ransack my house - I did what any good husband would do. I wanted to protect my home and protect my wife.

'There was no way I was going to let them go without a fight. They say an Englishman's home is his castle - but I think I just acted on instinct.

'I was not going to let them get away with it - and somehow I managed to turf them all out of the house one by one.'

The one minute 27 second video clip of the incident, which occurred on December 18, 2010, helped convict one of the intruders.

Duncan Berry, 23, was identified in the footage and pleaded guilty to the aggravated burglary at Northampton Crown Court.

He was sentenced to four-and-half years in a young offenders' institute on July 4, 2011, while he was aged 20.

During the struggle, Mr Adamson also managed to grab the balaclava from the face of one of the other men which later led to his arrest.

The mask was kept by police as evidence and after more than three years of testing, a DNA match emerged when David Jarvie was arrested for affray.

The 53-year-old was then arrested for his part in the burglary and owned up to the break-in during a police interview - telling officers he had been forced to take part by his drug dealer.

Jarvie, of Kettering, admitted aggravated burglary and actual bodily harm at an earlier hearing and was jailed for five-and-a-half years last week.

Sentencing Recorder Stuart Sprawson said: 'Your explanation maintains that you came under pressure to do your drug supplier a favour and that you were a lookout.

'However, you were inside the property and violence was used by you. The victim and his wife were both present.

'I am sure they were not only terrified but also horrified by what happened.'

Prosecutor Guy Bowden told the court: 'The homeowner and his wife returned home at about 12.40am after an evening out.

'As they approached their front door they found it open and they were confronted by two men, one of whom was armed with a black metal pole.

'The victim was struck several times over the head with the pole and his wife was pushed away, she made good her escape and went to get help.

'The victim continued to try to repel the attack and in the course of that he grabbed a balaclava-like mask off one of the men.'

In court, Jarvie even praised Mr Adamson for his bravery for confronting his gang on the night.

His defence barrister William Falshaw said: 'He knows it must have been terrifying for the victims.

'He says himself that the victim was a very brave man to stand up to a whole group of men, some of whom were armed.'

Dog's nose was hacked off by owner in Machete attack makes miracle RECOVERY

An abandoned dog is recovering well after heartless owners hacked off half her snout.

Five-year-old Fresa underwent three hours of reconstructive surgery after she was found wandering the streets following the brutal attack.

Fresa, which means 'strawberry' in English, was discovered on the outskirts of Mexico City before she was handed into the Santuario Milagros Caninos shelter in the Mexican capital.

Surgeon Jesus Paredes, who operated on Fresa, said half her snout was hacked off "with a sharp object, possibly a machete."

Mr Parades performed a three hour intervention to enable Fresa to breathe again through her nostrils, removing her protruding jaw and reconstructing her lips with flaps of skin and mucous.

Fresa continues to be cared for by the shelter and is said to be recovering well.

It comes after last month when American Stephen McGarva spoke out about dogs being hacked with machete and abandoned in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The 48-year-old, told of finding stray and abused dogs on the beaches of the island in his new book.

It is thought the dogs on the island are considered a plague to the local tourism industry of casino hotels, and many of the animals abandoned had been poisoned, hacked with machetes, burned to death, shot with guns or dropped off and run over.

Most Dangerous Jobs: U.S Snake 'milker' extract venom from World's Most Deadly Reptiles

When Jim Harrison says he spends his days milking animals, you could easily imagine him as a dairy farmer keeping a herd of cows.

But that is far from the truth, because the animals Jim keeps are some of the world's most dangerous snakes, and 'milking' is a slang term for extracting their venom.

Every day Jim catches hundreds of the reptiles with has bare hands before holding their heads up to a glass beaker which they bite onto, squirting their venom inside.

The 55-year-old and his wife Kristen, 37, house the largest venomous snake collection in America, and possibly the world, at their Kentucky Reptile Zoo.

Incredibly, Jim has been bitten eight times, including one bite from a lance-headed viper which left him in hospital for four weeks needing three operations to remove abscesses from his fingers.

Jim's injuries have left him without tips on some of his fingers and with scars across his hands, but he says the pain is all worthwhile because the venom he extracts can save lives.

Black mamba venom has been researched for Alzheimer's disease, Asian cobra venom for antiviral medication and Malayan pit viper venom for stroke victims.

Some copperhead venom has even been used in research on skin and breast cancer.

They sell the various venom for up to thousands of dollars primarily for biomedical research but also to pharmaceutical companies and university research.

Venom extraction is a non-intrusive process which allows the animals to bite and inject venom naturally.

Jim said: 'We have around 2000 snakes on site and average between 600-1000 extractions a week.

'The perception of anyone who keeps snake is a little weird - people don't understand why you would risk your life.

'But the reality is it's not that much risk if you use precaution, I think people get carried away from watching TV and the danger.

'Truthfully any of the snakes could be dangerous but they're only dangerous if you do something stupid.'

Jim has been interested in snakes from a young age, catching his first snake aged six, while Kristen became interested in reptiles in college.

After graduating from high school aged 17 Jim began keeping snakes and extracting venom.

The pair now run the Kentucky Reptile Zoo full-time. It is a non-profit relying solely on people coming through the gates and the sale of venom.

Kristen added: 'Almost any venomous snake is capable of causing severe injury but you are pretty unlikely to die if you get appropriate medical care.

'It's unlikely here as we do everything we can to get appropriate care and have anti-venom on site for everything anti-venom is made for.

'We both believe what we're doing is a good thing - it saves lives. The research can help people and it's good publicity for snakes as people know the venom is being used in applications which may help people one day.'
