Dog's nose was hacked off by owner in Machete attack makes miracle RECOVERY

An abandoned dog is recovering well after heartless owners hacked off half her snout.

Five-year-old Fresa underwent three hours of reconstructive surgery after she was found wandering the streets following the brutal attack.

Fresa, which means 'strawberry' in English, was discovered on the outskirts of Mexico City before she was handed into the Santuario Milagros Caninos shelter in the Mexican capital.

Surgeon Jesus Paredes, who operated on Fresa, said half her snout was hacked off "with a sharp object, possibly a machete."

Mr Parades performed a three hour intervention to enable Fresa to breathe again through her nostrils, removing her protruding jaw and reconstructing her lips with flaps of skin and mucous.

Fresa continues to be cared for by the shelter and is said to be recovering well.

It comes after last month when American Stephen McGarva spoke out about dogs being hacked with machete and abandoned in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The 48-year-old, told of finding stray and abused dogs on the beaches of the island in his new book.

It is thought the dogs on the island are considered a plague to the local tourism industry of casino hotels, and many of the animals abandoned had been poisoned, hacked with machetes, burned to death, shot with guns or dropped off and run over.
